My health and fitness background started in
the mid 1970's, whilst playing football in the Lancashire Amateur
League, I developed a passion for training and in the early 80's
turned to athletics.
Although going into athletics late, I had reasonable success, running
several marathons in 2hrs 34 mins and gaining two gold, 1 silver
and two bronze A.A.A. medals in team events.
Once my athletic carrer went into decline I pursued my natural inclination
to help others by coaching. My success was almost immediate. The
first athlete I coached was a good club runner, and after a short
period of coaching she earned her first England vest. She held the
British 2 mile track record, which was only bettered by Paula Radcliffe.
In 1998 she qualified to compete in the Commonwealth Games 5000m
final in Kuala Lumpur.
Beverley Jenkins, 7 times world corporate challenge winner and Andi
Jones, 4th in the world mountain running championships are amongst
my students. Both of these athletes have represented England and
Great Britain on many occasions.
At present I still coach English and British Internationals.
My personal training career began as an extension of my athletics
career and in March 2002 I enrolled with Premier Training and graduated
fully qualified in June 2002 as a Personal Trainer. In the same
year I gained a Diploma in Sports Psychology at Newcastle College,
and in 2003 gained a certificate in Life Coaching.
In July 2002 I founded Merrell Personal Training.
